Retired Stephenson County Sheriff’s Sergeant and Freeport Businessman Brian Stewart is the Illinois State Senator for the 45th Senate District.
A fifth-generation native of Northwest Illinois, Stewart attended Freeport High School and is an Army veteran, serving as a Military Police Officer and Military Police Investigator. Upon completion of his military service, Stewart returned to Freeport to serve as a Stephenson County Sheriff’s Deputy, rising to the rank of sergeant. During this time, he was assigned to a major case squad, which overlapped the nine northwestern-most counties in Illinois – an area encompassing almost the entire 45th Senate District.
With a profound desire to provide for his young family, Stewart started a small business at his dining room table. His knack for business enabled him to retire early from law enforcement to grow his company full-time. Today, Stewart & Associates employs almost 500 people throughout two dozen businesses units across America. Most of these businesses are located in Northern Illinois, centered in his hometown of Freeport.
As our State Senator, his primary focus is putting Illinois in a regulatory and financial position to create quality middle-class jobs for working families, especially in agriculture and manufacturing, and help reinvigorate Illinois’ ailing economy, and increase state revenue without raising taxes. Senator Stewart has also zeroed in on the pension crisis as the top issue driving the state’s budget woes, and is committed to working in a bipartisan manner to resolve the issue.
In addition to his professional career, Stewart has served as a Freeport Alderman and Freeport Township Trustee. He’s also served as Chairman and Board Member of the Northwest Illinois Criminal Justice Commission, Stephenson County ETSB (911) Board, Freeport Area Chamber of Commerce and the Northwest Illinois Development Alliance.
Brian spent most of his formative years in public housing. His humble upbringing served as the primary motivation to make something of himself. In addition, he’s the former Chairman of the United Way of Northwest Illinois, FHN Foundation Be Cancer Free Campaign and was the Charter President of the Stephenson County Employees – UAW Local 2261. He is a current member of the Freeport Rotary, AMVETS Post 32 and the Stephenson County Farm Bureau.
Senator Stewart is a lifelong Republican because, as his personal story proves, anyone can achieve the American dream. Humble beginnings do not preclude success. Senator Stewart wants Illinois to be a state where hard work, dedication, and integrity can earn anyone their own version of the American Dream.
For the 102nd General Assembly, Senator Stewart serves as Spokesperson for the Pensions Committee, and as a member of the Agriculture, Energy and Public Utilities, Financial Institutions, Health Care Access and Availability, Judiciary, and Veterans Affairs committees. He also currently serves on the Legislative Ethics Commission, which works with the Legislative Inspector General in investigating allegations of misconduct by state lawmakers and staff.
